Direct from the Home Modification Loan Program

Many residents north of Boston recently received an informative direct mail piece from the Home Modification Loan Program (HMLP), a program CEDAC co-administers with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) on behalf of the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). This innovative state lending program helps income-eligible households finance home modifications that allow elderly residents and individuals with disabilities to continue to live in their homes as they age or help manage their disability.

“It’s important that all homeowners in the Commonwealth know that this resource is available,” said Susan Gillam, HMLP Program and Outreach Coordinator. “With an average loan of a little more than $21,000, HMLP has been transformational for families. While many professionals who provide services to seniors or the disabled are familiar with HMLP, we believe it’s important to reach out directly to homeowners and encourage them to call us with their questions. This outreach to communities north of Boston follows a similar public awareness campaign we conducted in Western Massachusetts earlier this year.”

HMLP assists seniors, individuals, and families of children with disabilities to finance the cost of renovations to their primary residence, such as ramps and lift installations and kitchen or bathroom modifications. In the last fifteen years, over 2,600 loans totaling nearly $60 million in no- or low-interest loans have been committed to Massachusetts homeowners in need of home modifications.
