Loan will let Bigelow daycare expand in Somerville
By Matt Byrne, Town Correspondent
The Bigelow Cooperative Day Care Center , which is based in Cambridge, will renovate and utilize a new space on Park Street in Somerville, including room for five classrooms, a kitchen, two offices, a library and conference room, and an indoor active play space, after a quasi-state agency awarded it $730,000 in loans, according to the lender.
The Community Economic Development Assistance Corporation, a public-private group that assists nonprofits to grow, awarded the loan as part of a $2.2 million round of lending. The Bigelow award was the largest among four other organizations that received money.
“High quality affordable housing and early care are necessary building blocks for strong communities,” said Roger Herzog, the lending organization’s executive director.
The Bigelow money was awarded in cooperation with the Children’s Investment Fund, another nonprofit economic development organization.
Currently, the daycare center serves up to 32 children at a time.
