City, State, and Federal Officials Celebrate Groundbreaking for New Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly (JCHE) Facility

In July, CEDAC joined city, state, and federal elected officials in a groundbreaking celebration for The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg House on Chestnut Hill Avenue in Brighton.  The new facility, which will create 61 supportive housing units for low- and moderate-income seniors, is being built by Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly (JCHE), and will connect to JCHE’s existing 700-unit campus in the Boston neighborhood.

An immigrant to the United States, Harry Weinberg was a successful entrepreneur who owned mass transit lines in many cities during the 20th century.  He created The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation in 1959 to help the poor and vulnerable, continuing work that he and his wife pursued throughout his career.

JCHE has offered quality housing for older adults of all backgrounds for more than five decades.  The non-sectarian non-profit organization provides seniors with the opportunity to access safe, affordable housing with services that allow them to live independently.  CEDAC participated in the project financing for Weinberg House through its management of awards from two of the state’s supportive housing programs – the Housing Innovations Fund (HIF) and Facilities Consolidation Fund (FCF).  The HIF award will allow the project to serve 7 chronically homeless seniors, with services provided by Hearth Inc.  The FCF funding will support 5 units that will be reserved for aging adults with lifelong development disabilities with services provided by Jewish Family and Children’s Services.

Roger Herzog, CEDAC’s executive director, was pleased to stand alongside Boston’s Mayor Marty Walsh, and U.S. Representative Michael Capuano, State Representative (and Chair of the Joint Committee on Housing) Kevin Honan, and Boston City Councilor Mark Ciommo, JCHE President and CEO Amy Schectman, and other project funders at the groundbreaking event.
